Application

Deepwater gas export pipelines, offshore crude oil trunk lines, and subsea interconnector pipelines requiring negative-buoyancy concrete weight coating.

28″ LSAW pipe with 3LPE anti-corrosion layer plus concrete weight coating (CWC) represents the most demanding coated pipeline specification in ZC Steel Pipe's supply portfolio. CWC transforms a positively buoyant pipeline into a negatively buoyant structure, allowing it to rest on the seabed under its own weight without anchor clamps or burial — the standard engineering approach for offshore pipelines in shallow to moderate water depths.

Coating system breakdown: - 3LPE anti-corrosion layer (ISO 21809-1): Fusion-bonded epoxy primer + adhesive + extruded polyethylene at standard 3LPE thickness. Provides the primary barrier against seawater and soil corrosion across the 25–30 year design life. Applied before the CWC layer. - Concrete weight coating — 70 mm minimum (ISO 21809-5): High-density concrete (typically 2,400–3,000 kg/m³) impingement-applied over the 3LPE layer. At 70 mm thickness on 28″ pipe, the added mass generates significant negative buoyancy — critical for gas export pipelines where gas-filled (low-density content) pipe would otherwise float off the seabed.

X52M PSL2: The M suffix designates manufacture to a specified maximum yield limit (yield ceiling per SMYS), preventing over-strong pipe that could become brittle or difficult to weld in the field. PSL2 adds mandatory toughness testing and tighter chemical limits appropriate for subsea service.

LSAW process at 28″: At 28″ OD, longitudinal submerged arc welding (LSAW/UOE) is the standard manufacturing route. The UOE forming and expansion process achieves tight OD tolerances and weld quality suited for offshore coating line mandrel handling requirements.

ZC Steel Pipe coordinated manufacturing, 3LPE coating, and CWC application across partner facilities and supplied this 350-piece order with ISO 21809 coating test certificates, full PSL2 mechanical and chemical MTC, and radiographic or automated ultrasonic weld inspection records.
