Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum wall thickness for API 5L X65 pipe?

API 5L does not specify a fixed minimum wall thickness for X65 — wall thickness is specified by the purchaser based on design pressure requirements. The standard specifies a negative wall thickness tolerance of 12.5% of the nominal wall. For a nominal wall of 12.7mm, the minimum acceptable wall is 12.7 × 0.875 = 11.1mm. PSL2 has tighter tolerances than PSL1.

What is the difference between API 5L PSL1 and PSL2?

PSL1 is the baseline product specification level with standard chemical, mechanical, and dimensional requirements. PSL2 adds controlled maximum yield strength, yield-to-tensile ratio limits, carbon equivalent limits, mandatory Charpy impact testing, full-length non-destructive examination, and tighter dimensional tolerances. PSL2 is required for gas service, sour service, and offshore applications.

What does the suffix letter mean in API 5L grade designations?

The suffix letter in PSL2 API 5L grades indicates the delivery condition (heat treatment): N = normalised or normalised rolled, Q = quenched and tempered, M = thermomechanical rolled, R = as-rolled (limited to certain grades). For sour service, add S after the condition letter: X65QS = X65, quenched and tempered, sour service qualified.

What is the minimum yield strength of API 5L Grade X65?

For API 5L Grade X65 PSL2, the minimum specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) is 448 MPa (65,000 psi), the maximum yield strength is 600 MPa, and the minimum ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is 531 MPa (77,000 psi). The yield-to-tensile ratio must not exceed 0.93 for PSL2. These tighter maximum property limits compared to PSL1 ensure predictable behaviour under operating loads and resist strain concentration during pigging and field bending operations.

What end finish options are available for API 5L line pipe?

API 5L line pipe is available with four end finishes: plain end (PE) — square-cut with no threads; bevelled end (BE) — 30° bevel for field girth welding, the standard for gas transmission pipelines; threaded-and-coupled (T&C) — API 5L line pipe thread, used for small-diameter gathering lines; and special end finish as agreed between purchaser and manufacturer. Bevelled-end pipe is specified for the vast majority of onshore and offshore transmission pipelines to enable automatic or manual arc welding per ASME B31.8 or DNV-ST-F101.

What is the carbon equivalent limit for API 5L PSL2?

API 5L PSL2 imposes a maximum carbon equivalent (CEIIW) per the IIW formula: CE = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15. For Grade X65 PSL2, maximum CEIIW is 0.43% (seamless) or 0.43% (welded, when C > 0.12%). PSL2 also limits the Pcm parameter for grades with C ≤ 0.12%: Pcm = C + Si/30 + (Mn+Cu+Cr)/20 + Ni/60 + Mo/15 + V/10 + 5B. These limits ensure weldability in field conditions and resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) in sour environments when the 'S' qualifier is also specified.
