Couplings are the weakest link in a threaded-and-coupled OCTG string if the metallurgy, thread form, or dimensional tolerances are off. This order of 15,000 API 5CT couplings in three sizes covered two thread forms — EU (External Upset) for tubing strings and LTC (Long Thread & Coupling) for larger-diameter casing — and two grades:
N80Q couplings are the standard choice for deeper or higher-pressure wells. The Q delivery condition ensures consistent mechanical properties through quench-and-temper heat treatment, giving minimum yield of 551 MPa (80 ksi) — critical for couplings that see combined compression, tension, and internal pressure loading through the life of the well.
J55 couplings are used in shallower, lower-pressure strings where budget is the primary driver. API permits J55 couplings with either N or Q delivery conditions; this supply was normalized (N) in line with the operator's specification.
